Shakedown’s WSDC Jack and Jill rules

Last updated 18 November 2025

Please refer to WSDC Rules for the qualifications and requirements of WSDC skill level divisions: Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and All-Star. Be aware that Newcomer may or may not be available for registration at Shakedown.

Shakedown Swing Jack and Jill competitions are gender neutral.

You may compete in a maximum of two WSDC skill level Jack and Jill competitions - once in your primary role, and once in your secondary role. If you qualify for more than one skill division, then you may choose either to compete in as your primary role at Shakedown.

Your secondary role is the opposite role of your primary one. If you choose to register in your secondary role you may do so one or two levels lower than your primary role, unless your existing points require you to compete at a certain level. If existing points require you to compete in the same division in your primary and secondary roles, then you may only select one role for the competition.

  • All dancing must be recognisable lead or follow. Pre-choreographed routines in Jack and Jill, in whole or in part, are not allowed.
  • At least 80% recognisable swing content is required.
  • All competitors must wear their bib numbers for all rounds of competition.
  • You must remain in your selected role/s in the respective division/s for the entirety of the competition.
  • Competitors must maintain physical contact except for spins, turns, short breakaways, and recoveries.
  • “In the air” partner weight support moves (lifts, aerials) and acrobatic manoeuvres are not allowed, with the exception of an Invitational Jack & Jill, where lifts below the shoulder are allowed.
  • “On the ground” support moves (such as drops and slides) are allowed. You and your partner must each maintain at least one foot in physical contact with the floor during support moves.
  • There are no clothing specific restrictions but we expect a tidy and appropriate standard of dress.

Shakedown makes every effort to conduct all competitions in accordance with current WSDC guidelines and reserves the right to update these rules if WSDC requirements change.

Ngā Tikanga Matatika / Code of Conduct

Last updated 18 November 2025.

For attendees

We value manaakitanga - respect, support, and kindness.

Respect personal space and preferences. Don’t put anyone into moves they’re not comfortable with - if you’re not sure it's best to ask first, or avoid entirely. Remember, anyone can decline a dance without explanation. Don’t film anyone without their permission.

Not everyone wants feedback at the same time or in the same way. Please avoid giving unsolicited feedback, whether it's during workshops, after competitions, or on the social floor.

Show respect for all demographics and backgrounds. Harassment or discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated.

Any behaviour compromising safety or comfort of our attendees, including inappropriate language or physical contact without consent, will not be tolerated and may result in expulsion from the event.

If you experience or see unacceptable or harassing behaviour please get in touch with any of the crew. You can find us at the registration desk, email us at code03swing@gmail.com, send us a message on Facebook, or complete the feedback form.

If you sustain an injury during the event, please let us know immediately. We have first aid supplies on hand and medical professionals in our crew.

Consequences
Any form of behaviour that affects people’s safety may be grounds for immediate intervention, up to and including disqualification from competition, asking you to leave the event without a refund, and/or being banned from future events. If a situation is significant, we may share information with the organising crew to make decisions.

Staff and crew

Thank you for joining us as part of the team this year! We chose you to join us on crew as you are positive role models for our community, and we want your help to promote a safe and respectful environment. In order to keep Shakedown Swing a safe and happy event we ask you follow a couple of additional guidelines to our Code of Conduct.

Give attendees your full attention while doing your assigned tasks, and avoid distractions or anything that could impede your judgement.

Turn up on time for your assigned tasks. Speak respectfully about fellow staff members. Please refrain from discussing contest placements until scores are public.

Disclose any personal relationships with contestants - this helps us prevent any conflicts of interest. Please consider the position you hold, and do not use this to provide undue influence on competitors for private lessons, coaching etc.

Consequences
We trust you’ll meet these guidelines to the best of your ability. Failing to do so may lead to intervention, including dismissal.

If you have any questions or concerns please let us know.

Kia horahia te aroha. Whakawhetai koe.
